Dutch Store Front Grant

Orange City is proud of its Dutch heritage and has a long reputation of encouraging a uniquely “Dutch” experience. In an effort to maintain the customs, culture, and architecture of their homeland, the Dutch immigrants applied the “Old Country” look to the first downtown buildings.

In the mid 1980’s, the community sought ways to promoted its Dutch culture and experience. The advance and support this concept, the City Council instituted a “Dutch Front Program” that enhances the uniquely “Dutch” style of architecture in the downtown business district. Color schemes, types of shutters, gables, and other building design elements have been combines to make Old World “Dutch” buildings different from contemporary styles of architecture.

Over $700,000 in matching grant funds have been invested in the last 20 years for store front renovations. The Dutch Store Front Grant Program has helped 50 plus building owners to expand and update their storefronts. The completed buildings have proven popular with customers and visitors, especially during the annual Tulip Festival.
