Fishing Opportunities in the Orange City area
If you are looking for different fishing opportunities to explore for you, or your family this summer, Orange City offers many different varieties of public fishing opportunities.
- Dunlop Wildlife Area: Dunlop Wildlife Area provides a great place to fish and enjoy nature. Surrounded by trees and natural grasses, Dunlop Wildlife Area provides a great backdrop for your fish adventure. With opportunities to catch Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Blugill, Perch, and Walleye, you never know what you might catch! Dunlop Wildlife Area is located just off Highway 10 and is on the north side across the road from Roadside Park in Alton.
- Landsmeer Golf Course: Landsmeer Golf Course is a great place to fish for big Largemouth Bass, or plenty of Bluegill and Crappie. Located on the southwest side of Landsmeer Golf Course, it provides an excellent opportunity for shore fishing. Please remember to not fish on the golf course side, as that side is part of the course.
- Event Center Pond: Located just behind the Event Center, this pond is a great place to go and catch large numbers of fish. Largemouth Bass, Bluegills, and Crappie are swimming in this small body of water. This is a great place to go for someone looking to catch their first fish.
- Hospital Pond: This pond is located behind the Orange City Hospital and connects to the Puddle Jumper Trail. This body of water might be small, but don’t let that fool you. Quality fish can be caught here. From Largemouth Bass to big Bluegills. This pond will not disappoint!
*All ponds are catch and release, unless stated. State Fishing Regulations apply to all. Please remember to pick up any trash that you might bring along.
Iowa residents may fish without a license on June 3, 4 and 5 as part of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) free fishing weekend. Free fishing weekend is the first weekend in June each year. It gives you a chance to try fishing without purchasing a license, though all other regulations remain in place.
If you catch your first fish, take a photo and send it in to receive the DNR’s first fish award. Qualifying fish caught during free fishing weekend are also eligible for master angler recognition. Find more information on the first fish and master angler programs at www.iowadnr.gov/Fishing/MasterAnglerFirstFish.aspx.
Free fishing weekend coincides with fishing clinics, derbies, and other events. A list is available through the DNR special events calendar at http://programs.iowadnr.gov/specialevents/Search.aspx. Some of the fishing events scheduled throughout the state include:
