SUMMARY:"ten Boom the musical"
DESCRIPTION:  \nMembers of First Reformed Church in Orange City will present a musical based on the story of Dutch Holocaust survivor Corrie ten Boom Aug. 18\, 19 and 20 at 7 p.m. and Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. in the church’s sanctuary. \nThis will be the second public performance of “ten Boom\, the musical\,” which was written by Susan Meredith Beyer and Donna Marquean Griggs\, based on the book “The Hiding Place” by ten Boom and Elizabeth and John Sherrill. It was first staged by Grace Christian School in Bennington\, Vt.\, in 2014. \nThere is no charge for admission to the musical but a free-will offering will be collected for a ministry to refugees by Samaritan’s Purse and for the church’s Project 78 facility addition\, which will be dedicated that weekend. A dinner theatre on Aug. 20 at 5:30 p.m. will feature a meal in the church’s new multi-purpose area prepared by Home Plate Catering\, followed by prime seats at that evening’s performance. Tickets for the dinner theatre are $15 and are available at the First Reformed Church office. \nThe musical dramatizes the story of ten Boom\, who lived a peaceful life with her family above their watch shop in Haarlem\, the Netherlands\, until the Nazis invaded their homeland during World War II. Devout Christians\, the ten Booms undertook a dangerous mission to hide more than 800 Jews. Corrie and other members of her family joined the resistance and were later arrested and taken to prison\, where many of them died. She survived three concentration camps and went on to author many books. \n“The story of the ten Booms’ courage and faith has touched my heart for years\, and living in a community of Dutch heritage\, there’s an added connection\,” says Tom Hydeen\, the church’s facilitator in prayer\, calling and worship\, and the music director for the performances. “The ten Booms did what was right and still ended up in prison. Yet even there they saw God at work. He didn’t abandon them. One of the key messages from the musical is that God can be trusted in spite of devastating circumstances.” \nLeanne Bonnecroy\, director of children’s ministries at First Reformed Church\, is serving as stage director of “ten Boom\, the musical.” The cast includes over 50 church members\, many of whom have had roles in Orange City Tulip Festival night shows and other area productions. \nThe musical’s script and music were written by Beyer and Griggs\, sisters who began the work in 1985\, completed it in 1997 and oversaw the recording of its soundtrack in 2010. Beyer\, of Nashville\, sang for four years with Grand Ole Opry member Whisperin’ Bill Anderson and was a TV talk show host and producer. Griggs\, a businesswoman in Fort Worth\, Texas\, also has used her musical talents over the years for community events and church productions. \nFor more information about the musical\, contact First Reformed Church at 712-737-4909 or firstreformedorangecity@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:The Heart of Hell Researcher's Talk
DESCRIPTION:  \nClifford Lemke\, Dennis Blocker’s grandfather \nPacific War Historian\, Dennis Blocker\, will give a talk at the Orange City Public Library on July 28 at 6:30 pm. Blocker will share about his research for The Heart of Hell: The Untold Story of Courage and Sacrifice in the Shadow of Iwo Jima. Blocker’s research was initiated after the suicide of his grandfather\, and inspired by Blocker’s mother. The research that started with his grandfather’s experiences in World War II grew to include the experiences of  men who served with his grandfather. Blocker will share the story of Fred Cooper\, an Orange City resident during WWII\, his wife\, Mary\, and their daughter\, Rebecca. A memorial in honor of Fred Cooper can be found at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. \n  \nFind more information about the book and the history behind it on the book’s website\, http://www.lci449.com/. \nRead a blurb about the book\, from the N’West Iowa Review. \nCopies of The Heart of Hell will be available to check out at the Orange City Public Library in the weeks before this discussion. \n\nDennis Blocker Bio: \nDennis Blocker was born into an Air Force family and as such traveled the globe. He had the privilege of attending DOD schools all over the United States and Iceland. A tremendous love of country and an appreciation of the military were instilled in him early on. \nDennis has worked in San Antonio Emergency Rooms for the past 17 years as a medic. 12 of these years were in a Level 1 Trauma Center. In his spare time Dennis researched his grandfather’s WWII service to fulfill a request by his mother. What Dennis discovered was an untold story of WWII in the Pacific. \nOver the past 15 years Dennis has interviewed over 300 WWII veterans who were associated with his grandfather’s gunboat group. The research also uncovered over 400 letters written by men who were killed in action at Iwo Jima. This research has led to the publication of the book The Heart of Hell written by Mitch Weiss who was approached by Dennis regarding the amazing story. \nDennis has served as the Pacific War Historian for the National Landing Craft Infantry Association for the past 10 years. In that capacity he began a strong campaign to attain the stories\, photographs and memorabilia from LCI veterans. The effort was a tremendous success and saw the LCI Archive Log Book grow from 15 pages to well over 100. Dennis then oversaw the donation of that organizations Archive to the National Museum of the Pacific War. Dennis has also been responsible for the indexing and bequeathing of WWII veteran and author William McGee’s Research Files to the museum. \nDennis has enjoyed a close relationship with the National Museum of the Pacific War where he has been active in preserving WWII history and encouraging veterans and families to donate their WWII stories and memorabilia to the museum. \nThrough his research Dennis has been able to provide documentation to families allowing them to procure headstones for their loved ones\, disability for those veterans wounded at Iwo Jima and closure to families grieving over 70 years. \nRecently Dennis was invited to speak at Auburn University\, Alabama and the Alabama State Archives. These venues were well attended and feedback has been very positive. Attendees were amazed to learn about the pre-invasion mission at Iwo Jima as well as the years of research that went into the telling of this story.

SUMMARY:Barn Quilts
DESCRIPTION:Suzi Parron\, author of Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail Movement\, will take you on a journey along the quilt trail\, beginning with the very first barn quilt\, which stemmed from Donna Sue Groves and her wish to honor her mother’s quilting art. Suzi’s presentation features over one hundred stunning photographs of barn quilts\, some of which rival cloth quilts in their intricacy. You will hear stories of some of the individuals who have painted quilt blocks to honor loved ones or their local culture\, along with a few humorous anecdotes. \nThe presentation is both informative and entertaining\, as Suzi explores the way in which our quilting heritage takes on new meaning as this movement continues to expand. \n  \nVisit Suzi’s website\, www.barnquiltinfo.com\, for more information.
