DESCRIPTION:The Tulip Festival Steering Committee invites adults\, college-age and older\, to participate in the Adult Dutch Dance portion of this year’s Straat Feest. Both new and returning dancers are welcome and encouraged to join. \nAdult Dutch Dance practice dates are set for five Wednesday evenings\, beginning in April. The dates include April 8\, 15\, 22\, and 29\, as well as May 6. A final practice will be held on Monday\, May 11. Each practice will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. at the Orange City Town Hall. \nAuthentic Dutch costumes are required for participants. DESCRIPTION:It’s the Orange City version of Dancing with the Stars\, but don’t be sidetracked by “klompen.” No wooden shoes will be allowed. The March 21 event features six local pros and six local “celebrities\,” willing to shimmy and shake in front of an audience\, to raise funds for the arts. It’s a competition\, of course\, with the grand prize winner chosen by judges and audience members\, but it is also a fundraiser for the Arts Council: for a new mural in downtown Orange City\, to help fund the summer shows in the park—Onstage Orange City\, and to bring a professional ballet company presenting The Nutcracker. SUMMARY:Orphan Train Presentation at Library
DESCRIPTION:On March 7th\, at 1:30 pm\, author Clark Kidder will give a presentation at the Orange City Public Library\, sharing his knowledge of the Orphan Trains. Between 1854 and 1929\, nearly 250\,000 children were transported from New York City to the homes of farm families in almost every state\, particularly in the Midwest. Kidder tells the story of his paternal grandmother\, the late Emily (Reese) Kidder\, of Milton\, who was brought to Wisconsin in 1909 as one of these orphan children. He will read from his new book\, Emily’s Story – The Brave Journey of an Orphan Train Rider. Kidder will also show pictures from the book in a PowerPoint presentation. The program will allow time for questions and answers. Admission to the program is free. The speaker will have copies of his Orphan Train themed books for sale and signing at the program. Mr. Kidder’s book should be available for check out at the Orange City Public Library soon.
