Ongoing tree and branch removal for City of Orange City

Dear residents,

As clean-up of damaged trees in the City limits of Orange City continues, we would like to answer a few questions that have been raised.

The City tree pile at the compost site continues to remain closed until the tree chippers are able to come and clear that area. Please bring your tree debris to either the west end of 18th street (old airport area) or to the pile on Industrial Road just south of GCC. We hope to have all of the tree debris chipped and removed by later this fall.

Over 125 trees are contracted to be removed in City parks and along street right of ways. Most of these are diseased ash trees, and they were marked with a white X prior to the derecho. This project will be completed prior to December 1, and will include stump grinding and replacement of soil. Property owners are responsible for reseeding these areas.

Trees that have been damaged by the wind and located in the City right of way continue to be the responsibility of the homeowner. If you notice “hangers” or broken branches that pose a risk for injury or damage, please make an effort to work with a local contractor to remove the dangerous limb.

Removal of diseased trees or trees damaged by the wind on personal property are the responsibility of the homeowner. Residents are encouraged to make efforts to remove those trees that put their own property at risk, as well as your neighbors.

Final clean-up of trees and branches in our City parks, along our trail system, and in the cemetery will continue for the next several weeks and will be completed by either City staff or area contractors.

Residents are encouraged where possible to replace trees with a variety of species. Please check with a reputable landscape company or tree service business for suggestions on planting. Trees replaced in the right of way are requested to be at least 9 feet from the curb to allow for snow removal. Before planting please call Iowa One Call 811 to avoid any underground utilities.

Thank-you for your cooperation and continued efforts to clean-up damaged trees throughout the community!
