The Orange City electric utility was founded in 1923. The city has continued to make improvements to the electric distribution system as the community grows and technology improves. One of these improvements has been the full conversion to an underground system, resulting in better reliability and minimal outages.
The Electric Department includes five linemen. Their responsibilities include operation and maintenance of the distribution system, monitoring load on the system to maintain reliability, installing services for residential, commercial, and industrial customers, tree trimming, and street light maintenance. Each year, the Electric Department replaces and upgrades aging cable and infrastructure.
Orange City’s receives its power from several sources. The city is a member of Missouri River Energy Services (MRES), an organization that provides power to 60 municipal utilities. The city also receives power from the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA), a federal organization who operates the hydroelectric dams on the Missouri River. The City of Orange City receives power from a variety of generation facilities, including hydro, coal, natural gas, nuclear, solar, and wind. This diversity of generation ensures greater reliability, resilience, and affordability.
