The Dutch American Heritage Museum is honored to announce that J. Bruce Mouw, one of the nation’s foremost authorities on organized crime, will be the featured speaker for the next Nights at the Museum lecture series event.

Mouw’s presentation, titled “John Gotti and the Mafia in New York”, will explore his decades of experience investigating organized crime and corruption at some of the highest levels of American law enforcement.

During his distinguished 27 year career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, he served as a Supervisory Special Agent in the New York Division, where he directed investigations into the notorious Gambino crime family. His leadership played a central role in major racketeering cases involving figures such as John Gotti, Paul Castellano, Salvatore “Sammy the Bull” Gravano, the Westies, and the landmark Commission Case that reshaped federal prosecution of organized crime.

The Pride of the Dutchmen Marching Band is proud to present the 23nd Annual Dutchmen Field Championships at Korver Field on October 10. The event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and feature a fireworks display to conclude the evening. We invite the community to come and enjoy a variety of bands from around the Midwest. Some important reminders for the community:

• Frankfort Ave by the high school will be closed for most of the day. (8th St. SE to 5th St. SE from roughly 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.)
• Fireworks will be launched from the sandpit area behind ACE Hardware sometime around 9:45 p.m. at the conclusion of the event.
• There will be heavy bus, car, and pedestrian traffic around the stadium and high school. Please be extra vigilant and patient with out-of-town visitors.

The Cities of Orange City & Alton are co-sponsoring a free e-recycling program on October 16 and 17.

All citizens of OC and Alton who would like to utilize the e-recycling program will need to go to City Hall to pick up a free tag. Your tag will be required before disposing of your recyclable items. You will need one tag regardless of number of items. If you do not have a tag, you will be asked to provide identification.

Acceptable items: Computer monitors, CPU’s, keyboards, printers and mouse(s), smaller batteries, and TVs.

Each spring, Orange City bursts into color, and it all begins with tulip bulbs planted this fall! This October, volunteers will once again plant 40,000 tulip bulbs throughout the city, ensuring beautiful blooms come May. Leading the way are Nora Mulder and John Buntsma, who will gather helping hands in Windmill Park on October 23 at 1:00 pm and October 24 at 8:30 am. Rain dates are October 30 & 31.

City of Orange City Notice to Residents

The City of Orange City will begin reviewing trees located in the public right-of-way to identify branches that are low-hanging, obstruct visibility, or create access concerns for vehicles, pedestrians, or city equipment. Trees must be trimmed to provide a minimum clearance of 8 feet above sidewalks and 15 feet above roadways.

Property owners with trees that do not meet this clearance requirement will receive a notice by mail. Residents who receive a notice are asked to complete the required trimming by May 31, 2027.

The City will also share reminders about this process through its newsletter, website, and social media channels so residents have time to plan and complete the work.

If the required trimming is not completed by the deadline, the City may arrange for the work to be completed and pass the costs along to the homeowner.

After this initial review and notification process is complete, future complaints related to low-hanging trees will be handled through Cloudpermit as nuisance cases. Residents will receive notification and will have 30 days to correct the issue before the City proceeds with corrective action.
