City of Orange City Shares Plans for New Police Department Facility

As part of the City of Orange City’s strategic planning process, one initiative identified this year was to explore options for a police department facility that can better meet the department’s current and future needs.

The Orange City Police Department has grown to nine officers and has outgrown its current space in City Hall. After a property on Highway 10 became available, City staff began exploring the possibility of relocating the department to a new facility on the former Vander Pol Excavating property.

“We’ve known for some time that we’ve outgrown our current space, and this location provides an opportunity to create a facility that better serves our officers and our community,” said City staff.

The proposed location on Highway 10 would provide several benefits, including improved access for emergency response and a more functional space for police operations. As downtown Orange City continues to experience increased traffic and activity, relocating the department would also allow officers to respond more efficiently to calls throughout the community.

The proposed facility has been designed with both current needs and future growth in mind. Plans include:

• Improved evidence storage and preservation, with evidence secured on the same side of the building as other police operations
• A search bay and interview room designed to provide more secure and efficient evidence handling
• An expanded holding room to accommodate more individuals when needed
• Dedicated space for the department’s K9 unit
• Additional office space that can accommodate future growth
• A facility designed to support recruitment and retention of police personnel

The City has worked with BEI to develop preliminary concepts for the building and is now preparing to move forward with plans and specifications to present the project for bidding.

The proposed facility represents a long-term investment in the Orange City Police Department and the community it serves. City officials are excited about the location’s potential and the opportunities the new facility would provide for current and future police operations.
