windmill park playground to receive new equipment this spring

Following the July derecho, the City of Orange City has taken important steps to address storm damage at Windmill Park, including the removal and replacement of the park’s main playground structure.

The severe storm extensively damaged the playground when falling trees and branches struck the equipment. A certified playground inspector assessed the structure and determined whether repairs were possible. After evaluating the damage, the inspector deemed the equipment unsafe and unusable and outlined options to either restore it to code or replace it entirely.

Because the damage was extensive and the structure was aging, the City worked with its insurance provider to evaluate next steps. Insurance approved funding to replace the damaged playground equipment.

After reviewing the findings, the City Council approved replacing the playground rather than repairing it. The Council authorized the purchase of a new playground structure from Boland Recreation, which will also complete the installation. The total cost of the new equipment is approximately $100,000.

“We had a certified playground inspector review the damage, and it was clear the structure could no longer be safely used,” said Noah Minnick, Parks and Recreation Director. “With the age of the equipment and the cost to repair it, replacing the playground was the best long-term solution for our community.”

The old playground equipment has now been removed, and the new structure has been ordered. Installation is planned for this spring. The new playground will feature updated equipment and expanded play opportunities designed for children and families of all ages. Once installed, it will provide a refreshed, safe, and engaging play space for the community to enjoy.

“We’re excited about what this new playground will bring to Windmill Park,” Minnick added. “It will offer more ways for kids to play and families to spend time together, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back this spring.”
