Battery recycling is here!

If you have old batteries sitting around the house, we have a new option for you! Orange City now has a collection box for alkaline and rechargeable lithium batteries, along with tablets and phones, making it easier for residents to dispose of them properly.

Lithium and alkaline batteries are found in many everyday items, including power tools, electronics, and other rechargeable devices. While they’re convenient, they can become a serious fire hazard when placed in the garbage or recycling. Batteries can still hold energy even when they’re no longer being used, and if they’re crushed or damaged in the waste stream, they can spark and cause a fire.

To help prevent this, we’re asking residents to keep rechargeable lithium and alkaline batteries out of their garbage and recycling bins.

The new battery collection box is located at the Orange City Street Department, 809 Concord Place SE. Simply bring your used batteries there instead of putting them in your household trash or recycling.

One important reminder: damaged, swollen, or leaking batteries should not be placed in the collection box. If you have one of these batteries, contact the Northwest Iowa Landfill for proper disposal instructions at 712-324-4026.

It’s a simple way to help protect workers, equipment, and our community while keeping batteries out of the waste stream.

So, the next time you find an old battery, don’t toss it in the trash. Bring it to the new collection box at the Street Department!
