As the smallpox epidemic spread through Northwest Iowa in 1882, some locals (whom outsiders called “Hollanders”) refused to be injected with the cowpox vaccine that had proven effective against the disease for more than 85 years. How did others in the region respond to the Hollander’s reticence?
