In 1918, WWI’s anti-immigrant jingoism incited a vigilante band of Iowa farmers and led to the burning of Dutch-Americans’ barns, businesses and other buildings east of Pella, Iowa—including Peoria Christian Reformed Church and the nearby Christian school.
