What Is LiHEAP?

The Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program (LiHEAP) is designed to aid qualifying low-income Iowa households (homeowners and renters) in the payment of a portion of their residential heating costs for the winter heating season, to encourage regular utility payments, to promote energy awareness, to encourage reduction of energy usage through energy efficiency, and client education. All clients applying for this program will simultaneously be making application for weatherization assistance as required by state law.

When can I apply for LiHEAP?

LiHEAP applications are accepted on a first come/first served basis from November 1 thru April 30. Elderly and disabled clients may apply beginning October 1.

Who is eligible for LiHEAP?

A household may qualify for heating assistance if the total household income falls within the income range listed below:

Households who are over these income guidelines may be eligible through our medical waiver component. The medical expenses must be documented as paid and nonreimbursable. For families with more than 5 members, add $7,735 for each additional member.

What documents do I need to apply?

Original Social Security or I-94 card for ALL household members; birthdates for ALL household members; current heat & electric bill – this may be two separate bills; proof of income – this includes total household gross income from all sources; other income – alimony and child support will also need to be verified.
