Sioux City Sculptor’s Exhibit, “In Process”, featured at Te Paske Gallery
Arts, nowSioux City artist Ken Peterson will display his work in Northwestern College’s Te Paske Gallery Jan. 7–23.
A public reception is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 9, at 7 p.m.
Entitled “In Process,” the exhibit is a visual display of the development and repetitive practice of making functional objects in wood.
Peterson is a native of Portland, Ore., and his experiences with nature in Oregon, California and Alaska have influenced his work. After earning a degree in sociology, he eventually settled in Iowa, where he developed an appreciation for wood and a distinctive sociological perspective in his sculptural motifs.
“This series explores my tooling and finish methods applied to functional objects intended for daily use. Adding the idea of utility to my art stretches the challenge of its creation.” A simple jelly spoon, for example, becomes a study in crafting form and balance as well as ergonomics and durability. Peterson’s sculptures could become part of a daily interaction, and the concept of usefulness is one principle of the collection. Peterson’s work has appeared in art centers, fairs and festivals in Sioux City, Omaha, Des Moines, Minneapolis, Chicago and Denver. He is a frequent winner of “Best in Show” awards, was the featured artist for the Iowa Artist Showcase of the Iowa Governor’s Office, and had his work commissioned for the Outdoor Sculpture Trail in Okoboji, Iowa. In 2013 he was commissioned to make the Tri-State Governor’s Award for the governors of Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska.
The Te Paske Gallery is located in the Thea G. Korver Visual Arts Center, on Highway 10 at 214 8th Street SW in Orange City. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to midnight Sunday.
Hampton Inn Offers Free Lodging For Hospital Patient’s Families During Christmas
Business, Lodging, nowHampton Inn of Orange City, one of the region’s newest hotels, is offering a free night’s stay for families of hospitalized patients at Orange City Area Health System during Christmas. Anyone with a family member who is hospitalized on Christmas Eve or Christmas night may book up to two complimentary rooms at the hotel.
“Being in the hospital over Christmas can mean being away from family,” noted Brock Jensen, manager of the Orange City Hampton Inn. “Often the cost of accommodation can keep family from visiting. We want to do our part in eliminating that cost for traveling families of hospitalized patients. It is our hope to help bring families together and to enjoy a very Merry Christmas. ”
Marty Guthmiller, CEO of Orange City Area Health System, added, “We are grateful for the generous offer from the Hampton Inn in supporting those whose loved ones are under our care. We appreciate their support of these families, as well as the impact that the Hampton is making in our community on many fronts.”
Hampton Inn opened its doors in Orange City in August, 2014, and has since earned five-star reviews on TripAdvisor. According to Jensen, its location on the Highway 10 East corridor near the hospital, and close to several eating establishments, make it a convenient and comfortable place for guests coming to northwest Iowa, particularly those who are visiting hospital patients.
Patients who are hospitalized overnight on December 24 or 25 will receive a voucher from Hampton Inn for the complimentary hotel rooms. For more information or to make reservations, contact Hampton at 712-707-4100. Reservations will be held at the regular rate until the voucher is presented upon check-in.
